Moral Downturn
It is not a surprise if a fourteen-year-old, promising, lass suddenly gets pregnant and spend the most colorful part of her life rearing a child, instead of going to school, looking for a career, and having a life of her own. Simply, to be a teen-aged mother today is as prevalent as to have extramarital affairs.
On the other hand, though it is news itself, no one will be surprise though to hear an eight-year old boy pick-pocket. Instead of blaming the boy, people will instead take pity on him, even blaming the plaintiff for being to harsh on him.
These are some of the scenarios which are everyday occurrences in the society today. Society is indeed in a moral downturn; a down turn that, if not acted upon, will eventually destroy mankind. Here are some of the most prevalent acts that continue to degrade the society and cause moral breakdown to all of us.
Everywhere we go, there are issues of pornography, prostitution, corruption, cheating, infidelity, and other acts considered immoral by the society. To hear of wives running away with lovers and teenage girls sold off to become sex slaves are horrendous news. But yes, these are facts. And these facts are omnipresent in society today.
Moral Downturn
Moral downturn is an unseen crisis, yet, this crisis is fatal to the existence of morality in the society. According to a doctor in India, as interviewed by Awake¸ “society is losing its cultural moorings.”
Hu Peicheng, secretary-general of the China Sexology Association said, “Before in society, we had a sense of right and wrong. Now, we can do whatever we want,” citing of the wayward behavior of the present generation.
Commercialism of products and extreme competition has also something to do with the meltdown of morality in the society. Materialism, indeed, plague the minds of everyone. What was once a simple lifestyle was now overshadowed by extreme materialism, selfishness, and the worldliness.
An ordinary student today won’t simple settle in having a cellular phone for he will crave for the latest model with extra gadgets that will indeed make him “in” with what’s the trend. We may also take materialism as this way: a teenager who wants to have not only the latest model of cellphone, but who also wants to have an MP4, a laptop, and follow the fad that fashion dictates. If these hungers for material things are not addressed, then he might resort to stealing or cheating just to feed his wants.
What’s even worse is that advertisements, instead of curbing, add up the urge for material pleasures. Using sex as a tool, the youth simply cannot say no, most especially if the advertisement tells that you’ll be behind the trend if you don’t have their products.
According to the Yorkshire Post, “Little more than a generation ago, such actions would have caused moral outrage.” But today, that outrage was silenced at society slowly adopts and considers these irrational changes to be a part of life. Even sexual imagery and pornography which were once condemned are now considered by some as spices to the banality of living.
Furthermore, the paper discussed that “material that was once only considered safe for an 18-plus is now often essential family viewing and, according to anti-pornography campaigners, often explicitly targeted towards children,”
No wonder, the youth today are more literate about sex and more prone to sexual intercourse compared to the youth half a century ago. These sexually explicit materials fuel their passion that even pregnancy cannot stop them. Anyway, what’s the use of contraception if they don’t use it?
Then, there is the issue about cheating and corruption which are present everywhere. In his book The Cheating Culture, David Callahan discussed that “cheating is everywhere.” Callahan emphasized the cheating of students in school, piracy of music and movies, robbery, workplace theft, corruption in the government, up to the use of steroids in sports.
The problems that the society faces nowadays are not simple problems that should be neglected. Indeed, they are pressing problems that need to be addressed so as to salvage whatever virtue is left for mankind.
An Answer to Every Problem
There are some countries who tried to launch moral recovery programs, one of them is the Philippines. But not all programs launched by the government are successful. even the Moral Recovery Program launched by former Senator Leticia Ramos-Shahani seemed to be fruitless after it begun more than 15 years ago.
The answer to the moral crisis that is present in our society today cannot be addressed by the government alone, nor can it be solved by the plans of the government of moral recovery. If people really want to make a change and the get up from the present decadence that the society now suffers, they have to begin with themselves.
To begin a change for the better is not an easy task. As a person wants to renew himself, temptation surely roams everywhere, trying to stop every man from doing good and from making a change in a person’s life.
To save the society from decadence is not an easy task. But it is harder to see society steadily sinking into vices and slowly decaying from the wrong norms. Renewing the society for the better is not just a task that should be shouldered by a single person. Change must begin within the heart of every person. There is no other way of saving ourselves from indecency, decadence, and continued immorality but to start the change within ourselves.
Praying and hoping for the better is a sure way to renew our battered society. Getting back to the basic virtues that were introduced to us when we were still young (like honesty, politeness, industry and discipline) is not bad at all. Anyways, these values showcase the best that man has. Then, let us not forget the words of our Lord. Surely, to read and digest that words written in the Holy Scripture is a sure way of enlightening ourselves and really learn what is right and wrong.
